POSTAL WORKER SENTENCED FOR DISTRIBUTING MARIJUANA
(HOUSTON, TX) Miriam Nathanson, 44, of Hockley, Texas, a postal employee, was sentenced to 4 months in federal prison for possession with the intent to distribute approximately 48 pounds of marijuana, United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle announced today. Nathanson was also sentenced to two years of supervised release, four months of which must be served as home confinement. Indicted on October 25, 2006, Nathanson plead guilty to the one count indictment without benefit of a plea agreement in February 2007.
At a re-arraignment hearing before United States District Judge Vanessa Gilmore, evidence was presented proving that Nathanson, a rural letter carrier with the United States Postal Service working out of the Hockley, Texas post office, used her position to facilitate the delivery of marijuana via Express Mail deliveries.
Nathanson confessed to assisting in the delivery of a 22 pound package shipped Express Mail from the Rio Grande Valley to the Hockley Post Office on September 1, 2006 by contacting a person known to her as “Gilberto” and notifying him of the arrival of the package. A second package weighing 23 pounds was hand delivered by Nathanson to “Gilberto” on September 9, 2007. Agents, who had initiated an investigation into Nathanson’s activities, had obtained a warrant to search yet another package Nathanson was to deliver. Nathanson did not deliver this third package containing marijuana and weighing 19 pounds because she spotted investigative agents watching her. Nathanson admitted she had agreed to help “Gilberto” with the delivery of some packages through the United States Postal system. In response to her question about what the packages contained, Nathanson claimed “Gilberto” told her it would be better if she did not know, but Nathanson admitted she assumed the packages contained drugs.
